NEW RELEASE- Hyperbaric Medicine Practice 5th Edition
February, 2025
Best Publishing Company released the 5th edition of Hyperbaric Medicine Practice edited by Harry T. Whelan, M.D. and shaped by over 70 contributors worldwide. Catch a glimpse of the magnitude of this edition as you read exerps of HMP 5th Edition's Preface written by Dr. Michael Strauss.
PREFACE
"The 5th Edition of Hyperbaric Medicine Practice has evolved into a monumental information source for our discipline of undersea and hyperbaric medicine. The text has expanded enough for it to be published in two volumes. It now has 50 chapters as compared to 46 in the previous 4th edition. This is not only a compliment to the contributors of the new chapters, but also a reflection of how hyperbaric medicine directions have expanded in the seven years since the previous edition was published. For this edition Dr. Harry Whelan chose to include the late Dr. Eric Kindwall as co-author of the reinstituted chapter on decompression sickness (DCS). Dr. Kindwall was the mastermind and editor of the first edition of HMP published 30 years ago. He and Dr. David Elliott were the authors of the DCS chapter in the first three editions of HMP.
"Hyperbaric Medicine Practice is the "go to" source for the
undersea and hyperbaric medicine board examination preparations.
It is a must for anyone studying or practicing hyperparic medicine."
Dr. Michael Strauss
No other source can in a single text give such a comprehensive spectrum of hyperbaric medicine, from clinical applications to undersea medicine, from mechanisms to off-label uses, and from safety to side effects. For the skeptics of hyperbaric medicine, the text thanks to the expertise of its contributors provides additional insight and support for the justification and spectrum of applications of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
ABOUT THE EDITOR
Harry T. Whelan, M.D., is Emeritus Professor of Neurology and Undersea/Hyperbaric Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is also a Captain and a Diving Medical Officer (DMO) in the U.S. Navy, a consultant to the Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU), and recently served as Commanding Officer of Marine Air Control Group 48 Medical and Undersea Medical Officer for Deep Submergence Unit.
ABOUT THE EDITION
The first volume of the 5th edition of HMP focuses on the approved uses of hyperbaric oxygen with considerations to its mechanisms, side effects, safety and contraindications, which comprise the mainstray of the clinical applications of HBO2 therapy. The second volume has expanded chapters on the branch of hyperbaric medicine dealing with undersea-submarine medicine, off label uses, and use of hyperbaric chambers for "gray areas which have some justification for use, but are often unregulated such as in sports medicine and traumatic brain injuries. In essence, this reaffirms the 5th edition HMP as the "Bible" of hyperbaric medicine wIth its tried-and-true indications and its exploratory and unproven uses.
Some other notable features of the 5th edition are the upwards of 70 contributors from multiple countries, its nearly 2,000-page length, and thousands of reference citations. Information on or metion of almost everything that has ever been said or done in hyperbaric medicine can be found in this edition of HMP.

FOCUS & FUTURE
Harry T. Whelan, Terrance L. Leighton III, Heather Annis, and Joseph Dituri, join together to write the final chapter, Ocean Exploration: Living in the Deep Sea. "From the beginning of time, humanity has been limited, and therefore intrigued by, the sea. We are forever surrounded by it and have barely begun to explore and understand it. Centuries ago it was thought to be controlled by Posiedon, and still to this day humans are limited by the mighty ocean. We try to sail over it, cruise under it, and live in it, and yet she so many times gets the upper hand because humans still need what the sea can't rovide...AIR."
This chapter invites readers on an underwater journey diving in with Jacques Cousteau, exploring Conshelf Series, building to the development of the SEA LAB projects created by the U.S.Navy. We explore the Poseidon Project, space, technology, and finish with protecting our oceans. The Motivation for this chapter is best expressed in the authors' own words:
"After writing Land to Sea, (Whelan HT, Annis, H, Guajardo P. From Land to Sea; Embracing a Renewable Future) which investigated the growing number of pharmaceuticals and other bioderived products from the deep ocean, the authors were struck by the differences in spending between space and ocean research at the expense of bio-innovation and conservation and thier direct contribution to improving and sustaining human existence on Earth."
